San Francisco

January 12th, 2007 by Josh

Hello everyone

Just a quick update on things - I have written some more but will take a day or two to get it finished.

I am in Walnut Creek in the East Bay area staying with some motorcycle travellers who have extended their hospitality thankfully.

Los Angeles didn’t work so well in looking for a bike but was good fun and I hope to spend a day or two there on my way back down. Around San Francisco I’ve looked at a few bikes and have a warm lead on a bikew that is almost new. It will need some modification for the trip but my be my best option.

Jon has found a bike. He got a lead from www.advrider.com forums which turned out to be a bike all modified and good to go. All he needs to purchase is tires and he’s away.

Undoubtedly best part of San Francisco so far has been Glide Memorial Church service. A very radical church inclusive of gays, the service emphasizes inclusiveness and is very political. Notably along with imagery of gay people, Nancy Pelosi and poverty, they had many references to Islam at a time when America is sharply divided and many are xenophobic. Difficult to explain but anyone coming through the city must go there - regardless of (dis)belief.

I love the Bay Area (although I have to admit it’s been the only part of the States I’ve been to).

What are the modifications you are doing? Large kiwi flag attachment? (Sorry, I know very little about bikes)

Just back from an amazing experience tramping the Hollyford Valley with John. I went WAY beyond my comfort zone! We walked from the mountains to the coast - 2 of the 5 days were pretty rough track. We got to try out our little tent - sleeping on the beach a couple of nights due to full huts. John had an interesting meeting with a possum…
Back to the reality of washing the gear today - but the experience will be sustaining once we head back to work etc.
I love your photos - looking forward to an update in your journal. When do you hope to hit the road?
