Hola from Mexico… (currently in Ensenada)

Hola Amigos, we arrived in Mexico yesturday through the rather small border crossing of Tecate. We opted for this entrance to avoid the crazyness of Tijuana - after talking with some locals, we discovered the line at Tijuana can often be as long as 4 miles. Fun.

Currently we are located at the town of Ensenada, on the west coast of Baja, in an hour or so we are going to make a run down the coast to San Filipe where we plan to camp for a few days before heading for La Paz, and the ferry to mainland Mexico. Unfortunatley this will only be a short update as time is pressing, but I promise a full fulll full report when I get time in La Paz. Mexico is crazy, a hedonists paradise. You can buy anything at the pharmacys, see some rather interesting live acts, smoke anything (including cuban cigars). Mariachis roam the streets in gangs, asking people if they may play them a song for a few dollars.

San Diego turned out to be my favorite amercan city, L.A. was completley utterly boring. From San Francuisco we headed south, then east up into the high lands. We spent a night camped in some isolated plains, a small town, then Death Valley… very beautiful. Then nito L.A, and down the coast to San Diego. Its gradualy been getting warmer, but is still a bit chilly. I shudder to think what may have eventuated had I not brught my extra sweater with me.

We had a rest day in San Diego, and in the process of walking around the town I stumbled into an anti-war protest. Snapped a bunch of photos for your viewing plesure…. so check them out.

On that note, I shall depart. My bikes name is Jezzabell, as I’ve had that song stuck in my head since I got here. us luck :)

Peace, Jonny.

    Hey guys,
Did either of you lose a tool kit in Death Valley? Someone found one on ADVrider. Probably someone from the Death Valley rally last weekend.

What was that pic were both bikes are on the ground in the dirt?

    Captions on photos are good.

I hope you got your Mexico vehicle import permits at the border??
If not, could be a problem. A 1000 mile problem.

    Good luck, stay safe.

    Pics are awesome!

Looks like you guys are doing pretty well with weather, lots of blue sky etc - lets hope it stays that way. Seems that you’ve picked a good time of year to go.

I am interested to hear about the pic with both bikes on the ground as well - did you both drop them at the same time, or just decided that side stands are way over rated… :D

Looking forward to the next update!

    Ben

Photo’s of sunset fabulous. Did you call you bike Jezzabel before or after you met the cardboard lady in the Truck. She looks like a Jezzabel to me!!
Tell us all about the bikes on their sides. Did you both fall off? Is there any chance that you can put the odd caption on your photos so we can get an idea where you have been.
Travel safely, we look forward to the next update.

Hmm .. the only ‘Jezabels’ in Wikipedia are a queen of ancient Israel,
    //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jezabel
and a contemporary US porn star
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jezebelle_Bond

Can you tell us more about this lady ?

    Adam. [ :-)

  7. Ben-Jah Says:

It’s the name of a song by Iron & Wine - and quite a lovely song at that :)

  8. Alex Says:

I like the name for your bike, ‘Jezzabel’. Sounds like the sort of evil name you need for a machine to get you safely through ‘Indjin’ country. Great photo’s also - keep the blog coming.
I often think of you guy’s, cruising down the highway with the wind in your hair - free as a bird, on your massive, excellent adventure, wondering where you are now , when I’m driving of to another (boring) day at work - Yawn!
Shit I wish I could do that Tooo!
    You’re sooooooooooooooooooo lucky, Alex.

Hi all, thought i’d drop you a quick note - the bikes got dropped while doing some off road stuff in Death Valley. Incedently, I found out the leading cause of death in Death Valley is nether snake bites nor ancient indian sacrifices - its care crashes.

I named the Bike after an Iron and Wine song, as Ben mentioned, how-ever the song is actually about the ancient queen of Isreal (unfortunatley not the porn star)

    Peace, jah love, Jonny

This is to update all you avid followers of Jonno and Josh’s epic adventure.
Jonno rang us in NZ for a couple of minutes this morning Thursday 8th Feb NZ time. They are both OK, in good spirits and approximately 400km north of La Pas. He said that the roads have been the roughest he’s ever been on to the extent its been rattling nuts and bolts loose on the bikes. He’s also canned off the bike a couple of times (fortunately at low speeds). Today they were doing maintenance and giving the bikes an oil change. He said he’d update us properly when they get to La Pas.

    Hi JP
We are enjoying following the intrepid journey (and trying to interpolate the oblique language you are using to communicate to those in the know without alerting your mother to what you have really been up to!). Love the pix and look forward to more updates in due course. Be safe…
